Davey to visit Ukraine charity: “Leaders across Europe must stand up to Putin”

11 Nov 2024

EMBARGO: 22:30 Thursday 7th November

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey is warning of the need for the Prime Minister and fellow leaders across Europe to show a united front in support of Ukraine following Trump’s election as US president.

It comes as he is set to visit a charity in Surrey on Friday, where he will join volunteers in packing winter survival kits for Ukrainian families who are facing their third winter under siege from Putin’s illegal invasion.

Davey has called on the Prime Minister to convene a ‘Save Ukraine’ summit in London to agree on seizing frozen Russian assets and using them to support Ukraine, to turn the tide of the war before the Trump presidency begins on January 20th. Combined together, Russian assets frozen by UK and European countries could provide Ukraine with a rescue package of over £40 billion worth of support.

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey said:

“The commemorations we will hold this Remembrance Sunday are a stark and timely reminder of the fragility of peace on our continent, and the harsh cost of conflict. The brave men and women of Ukraine are on the front line for the rest of the continent against Putin’s malign ambitions, and they face a difficult winter ahead.

“The re-election of President-elect Trump means it is more crucial than ever that leaders across Europe stand up to Putin and defend Ukraine against his illegal invasion. This starts with urgently agreeing to use the proceeds of frozen Russian assets across the UK and Europe, to provide Ukraine with an additional rescue package ahead of Trump’s inauguration.”
