Davey on Streeting comments: Government needs to go “much further and much faster” by u-turning on disastrous decisions

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to Wes Streeting’s comments on the Sunday shows this morning where he said that people should give the Government "more time", Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said:

“Keir Starmer said he wants to go further and faster, and now the Health Secretary is asking for more time to deliver. Labour have done far too little to clear up the Conservatives' mess, and they need to go much further and much faster.

“The Government has kicked social care into the long grass and their unfathomable decision to cut winter fuel payments cost them dear in these elections. They have got to crack on. The Prime Minister must start cross-party talks on social care now and wrap up the commission by the end of the year so we can get on and fix it. And he must see sense and u-turn on the winter fuel payment cut before next winter.

“It is the Liberal Democrats who are holding this Government to account, with the Conservatives completely abdicating their responsibilities as the official opposition. So many former lifelong Conservative voters have switched to the Liberal Democrats, and we are on track to overtake them at the next General Election."
