Davey calls for extra bank holiday to mark 80th anniversary of VE Day

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

The Liberal Democrats are calling for an additional bank holiday to commemorate next month’s 80th anniversary of the Allied victory in Europe.

Today (Tuesday 8th April) is exactly one month until VE Day 80 on Thursday 8th May.

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey said:

“The 80th anniversary of the Allied victory in Europe is a huge milestone for our country. Next month will be a moment to remember the sacrifices of all those who fought to defend our democracy and the freedoms we take for granted.

“It’s disappointing the Government has ruled out an extra bank holiday to commemorate this special moment in our nation’s history. I hope Ministers will think again and announce a one-off extra day of celebration to remember our history and honour our veterans. At this time of global turmoil, we could all do with a chance to bring the country together and mark this special occasion.”
