Privileges Committee: Sunak must order investigation into “gongs for cronies” scandal

The Liberal Democrats have called on Rishi Sunak to investigate whether any collusion took place between Boris Johnson and the MPs named in the latest privileges committee report - and commit to revoking their honours if there was. 

The Privileges Committee’s report into attempts to undermine its Partygate described a “coordinated campaign” to undermine its inquiry into Boris Johnson. 

Several of the Conservative MPs named in the report received honours in Boris Johnson’s recent honours list, including Priti Patel, Jacob-Rees Mogg, Michael Fabricant and Andrea Jenkyns.

Daisy Cooper MP, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, commented:

“Several of these MPs shamelessly attacked the Privileges Committee for investigating Boris Johnson’s Partygate lies and were then rewarded with gongs just weeks afterwards. This looks like a gongs for cronies scandal.

“Rishi Sunak has shown himself to be totally spineless so far on this issue. He refused to block Boris Johnson’s honours list, failed to vote for the Partygate report and his promise of integrity has been left in tatters.

“The least he can do now is order an investigation into whether any collusion took place between Johnson and these MPs, and commit to revoking their honours if it did.”
