Diversity & Inclusion

Our commitment to Equality, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Our beliefs are founded on the idea of empowering people to live their lives in the way they want, giving them the opportunities and safety they need to flourish.

These two strands of our identity - street level community politics and a deep commitment to empowerment - mean that representing and listening to everyone, from every social identity group is vital for us. These are more than just words; they are part of our values and these principles are deeply rooted in our constitution.

We have achieved amazing things politically standing up for what’s right but we recognise there is more to do with ensuring the party is inclusive to all its members and employees.

  • We have updated our employer value statements of which diversity is at the centre of them
  • We have updated our inclusion statements in our adverts
  • We have updated the role of employee reps which now explicitly includes the responsibility of dignity at work champion
  • Our employee engagement surveys now incorporate questions around inclusion
  • We have updated our disciplinary, performance & improvement and grievance procedures to ensure they are fully inclusive
  • We have sent a request to all our members and our employees  to update their diversity data
  • We have developed lighthouse so all local parties can access their diversity data themselves. The geek sheet is here
  • We have improved the collection of demographic data at application stage for employee recruitment
  • It is important that our employees feel they have a variety of routes to raise concerns and so our whistleblowing policy has been updated

Developing our LGBT+ policy for the future

Liberal Democrats want to build a country where nobody’s life chances are limited because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. That is why I will be producing a paper, as Women and Equalities Spokesperson, to outline what steps we need to take.
