At our Annual General Meeting in October, Liberal Democrats from across the Salford and Eccles constituency met to reflect on the past twelve months and plan ahead for 2024.

2023 has been a challenging year for everyone – between the cost-of-living crisis, the Tories’ chronic carelessness with the national economy, and Labour’s ongoing neglect of residents’ needs at a local level.

This year’s local elections saw the Liberal Democrats win big nationwide, especially in Greater Manchester, where we made significant gains in Manchester City, Stockport, and Trafford. Although it was a tough contest in Salford, we almost secured a third seat in Ordsall ward, placing us on a solid footing to build up for next year.

“Between a local election, a mayoral election, and a general election, 2024’s set to be a busy year for politics, locally and nationally,” said Chair John Grant. “People are fed up with politics as usual, in both Westminster and City Hall. They want to see active elected reps working to improve constituents’ lives and empower them to have a clear stake in running their local communities.

“The Liberal Democrats are delivering for Salford. We’ve punched well above our weight in the two years – Cllr Alex Warren’s Clean Up the Quays campaign’s been a massive success for our local environment; we’ve held City Council accountable for their reckless overbuilding policy; and we’re engaging closely with GM Police to tackle anti-social behaviour.

“We’re excited to go into 2024 with a fresh team ready to continue to deliver the positive change Salford deserves.”
