Cllr Moore secures new security checks on Lime Scooters after complaints

24 Nov 2024

Lime scooters are set to bring in new security checks after complaints about anti-social behaviour in Salford Quays. The company is planning to ask for a video selfie as part of two-step authentication checks for new users, to stop young people using a parent's driving licence to ride the scooters.

There are also plans for a new scooter drop off point between the Alchemist and the MediaCity tram stop, extending the areas where scooters will be blocked from use outside the Watersports Centre, and moving a scooter drop off point next to the bus stop on Quays Road 100m towards

It comes after residents complained about scooters being used in the early hours of the morning for anti-social behaviour, and scooters blocking pavements outside the bus stop on Quays Road after being used.

Salford Quays Coun Jonathan Moore said the changes should help to reduce the problems residents are facing.

He added: "It was pleasing to hear that they [Lime] listened to what we said, overall they were very happy to work with us on improving how it works. I believe what they have proposed will make a difference." “We are very pro active travel and green solutions to transport but these changes should limit the ASB associated with lime scooters in the Quays.”

Lime scooters are currently being used in Salford as part of a trial period set to last until May 2026. Each ride costs £1 to unlock and 17p per minute to use, with discounts available for job seekers, students and some employment sectors. Lime confirmed it is working to introduce the changes in Salford as part of its efforts to improve safety and security.
