Defending Civil Liberties

Protestors at a march for Gaza

Labour’s vote to proscribe Palestine Action is a serious misuse of power, threatening our freedom to protest.

The Liberal Democrats are clear: we condemn all violent attacks, criminal damage and hate speech – offences covered by existing laws.

Since Labour’s vote:

  • People could face 14 years in prison for holding a sign!
  • Pensioners are among the hundreds arrested.
  • The criminal justice system, with a backlog of 76,000 cases, is further stretched hearing pointless cases.
  • Ordinary people desperate to stop the slaughter in Gaza are branded “terrorists”

The Liberal Democrats will always fight to protect civil liberties and the right to peaceful protest.
