Wishart responds to BMA comments on women’s health plan

Responding to comments made by the deputy chairwoman of the BMA's Scottish GP Committee, Patricia Moultrie, that there is "a great deal more to be done before women and girls in this country really feel that things have substantially changed" in terms of healthcare provision, Scottish Liberal Democrat Beatrice Wishart MSP said:  

“Women and girls are some of the worst affected by the inequalities that loom large in our health service.  

“There are still postcode lotteries for women with diagnoses of ovarian cancer, significant problems accessing maternity care in the far north and a frightening number of women facing harassment outside abortion advice clinics.

“It is also clear that there are worrying discrepancies in how women are treated when they present with certain symptoms. These discrepancies can mean that diagnoses of, for instance, heart failure and heart disease can be missed or delayed. 

“The Women's Health Plan must not become yet another government talking shop.  

“From getting new mothers care closer to home to delivering abortion buffer zones at pace, Scottish Liberal Democrats would bring forward tangible action that will actively combat gaps in care and provision.”
