Responding to Jason Leitch’s appearance at the UK Covid Inquiry which heard that, in addition to describing the deletion of his WhatsApps as a ‘pre-bed ritual’, the National Clinical Director also advised Humza Yousaf to keep a drink in his hands at all times during a function to remain ‘exempt’ from the Covid rules, Liberal Democrat SCottish Affairs spokesperson Christine Jardine MP said:

“What a shower. Not only did Nicola Sturgeon’s government engage in the mass erasure of pandemic WhatsApps, but it also seems that the guidelines they issued were so confusing that even their own ministers struggled to keep up.

“People faced hefty penalties for not following guidance, but they lacked the clarity and certainty they needed to ensure they were complying. Meanwhile ministers got tips on how to sidestep and circumvent.

“Scottish Liberal Democrats repeatedly stressed the importance of ensuring the rules were logical, simple and apply to everyone. It is essential we learn that lesson as we move on from the pandemic and reflect on what could have been done differently."
