Rennie: SNP about to break promise to deliver an Erasmus replacement scheme

Scottish Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Willie Rennie MSP has today stated that the SNP is “about to break their promise” to bring in an Erasmus replacement scheme, after Cabinet Secretary Angus Robertson suggested that such a scheme may not be “workable.”  

Speaking in the Scottish Parliament, Mr Rennie asked Mr Robertson why Scotland had yet to introduce a scheme. In response, the Cabinet Secretary stated that: “This issue is not simply about having a scheme. It is not simply about finding resources. It’s also about a situation where whether it is workable or not given the circumstances of Brexit.”

Setting up an Erasmus replacement scheme has been an SNP manifesto promise since 2021.  

Speaking after the exchange, Mr Rennie said: 

“It’s clear now that the SNP are about to break their promise to deliver a successor to Erasmus.  

“It was a manifesto promise, but now they have endless excuses, blaming all and sundry but no timetable for delivery.  

“Wales has done it, but Scotland is stuck in the slow lane making pathetic excuses.”
