Liberal Democrat Budget Proposals to reduce the cost of living

13 Nov 2025

Alan Reid welcomed the Lib Dem Budget proposals for an emergency 5% VAT cut for hospitality, accommodation, and attractions and to remove the cost of the renewables obligation levy from household bills.

The Liberal Democrats called on the Chancellor to cut energy bills by removing the cost of the renewables obligation levy from household bills.

We also called for an emergency 5% VAT cut for hospitality, accommodation, and attractions.

This emergency package would be in place until April 2027 and would save a typical family around £270. It would be paid for by a windfall tax on banks.

Alan Reid said, “Accommodation includes businesses such as hotels, guest houses, BandBs, caravan pitches and rented holiday homes. This would be a great boost to the many accommodation and hospitality businesses in Argyll & Bute.”
