West Berkshire Lib Dems Fight to Save Day Travel Card

12 Jun 2023

The Liberal Democrats in West Berkshire are fighting to save the London One Day Travel Card, as they are “concerned” about the impact of its potential removal on the district’s residents and the environment.

In a submission to Transport for London’s consultation on the One Day Travel Card’s removal, the Liberal Democrat controlled West Berkshire Council have described the proposed move as contributing to “hurting the general public pocket at the same time as a cost of living crisis” and “flying in the face” of sustainable travel despite our commitments to tackle climate change.

The West Berkshire Liberal Democrats are particularly concerned by the likely impact on the poorest in our society’s ability to travel to and around London to enjoy our capital city’s many cultural benefits.

Denise Gaines, Liberal Democrat Portfolio Holder for Transport on West Berkshire Council, said:

“Putting an end to the availability of Day Travel Cards would be a move as short-sighted as it is regressive. Our efforts to tackle climate change must be inclusive of the poorest in society, but this move would be the opposite of that.

Reducing the availability of affordable travel around our nation’s capital will either deter West Berkshire residents from visiting altogether, meaning they’ll miss out on London’s rich cultural offering, or they will be forced into using less climate-friendly transport options, which flies in the face of our commitments to protecting our environment.”
