General Election Now

20 Oct 2022

Commenting on the news that Liz Truss has resigned as Prime Minister, Elizabeth O’Keeffe, Chair of the West Berkshire & Newbury Liberal Democrats, said:

“It is quite clear that the Conservatives are not fit to lead our country. A third Prime Minister in the space of a few months will make no difference to that.

Our country is in need of real change, not another Conservative Prime Minister failing to get to grips with the problems our country is facing. What we need is a General Election, so that the people of Great Britain can be given a say on the way forward, not another Prime Minister elected by out-of-touch Conservative MPs and members.

Only last night the Conservative MP for Newbury voted to stand by Liz Truss’ disastrous plans to frack the British countryside in a vote many saw as a vote of confidence in the Prime Minister herself. This couldn’t be further away from the priorities of local residents that we hear every day; from soaring mortgage costs to lack of access to NHS GPs and dentists. No matter who the next leader of the Conservatives is, it’s not at all clear that they’ll have any more of a plan to deal with the real issues facing residents than Liz Truss did.

As the local challengers to the Conservatives, at the next election people across Newbury will be backing the Liberal Democrats to get a fair deal on the NHS and the cost of living instead of more Conservative chaos.”
