North Road safety: update and community petition
We were absolutely horrified to hear the tragic news of the 16-year-old girl who died following a collision on North Road on 24 September. Our thoughts are with the family, and everyone affected by this devastating loss.
The community spirit in response to this devastating situation has been remarkable, with so many people pushing for changes, and families coming out to patrol and make sure that children are safe. Your Highgate Lib Dem team have raised residents’ concerns with council officers, calling for immediate support at school times alongside lasting safety improvements. These meetings are set to continue, so we encourage you to keep sharing your concerns with them - highgate@haringeylibdems.org.
Residents have also raised concerns about crossings on surrounding roads, which they are following up with the council.
In an update to councillors on 1 October, Haringey Council confirmed that it will carry out speed surveys at three locations along North Road, starting on Wednesday 7 October and lasting seven days.
These surveys will use automatic traffic counters. They are not the installation of speed enforcement cameras, nor does this announcement commit the council to a new crossing.
North Road safety petition
More than 3,000 people have signed a community petition seeking to establish both short and long-term changes to keep residents safe.
We support the petition’s calls for:
- An immediate School Crossing Patrol at school drop-off and pick-up times.
- An urgent, independent road safety review, alongside assessment and delivery of permanent improvements, including a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing.
- Additional traffic calming and stronger speed enforcement, including consideration of speed cameras where appropriate.
- A long-term safety plan developed with schools, parents and residents, with clear responsibilities and a timetable for action.
We encourage residents to add their names and share it with friends and neighbours. It is an opportunity to demonstrate the strength of community support for practical, lasting improvements.
