Haringey recycling rate falls to 12 year low

Haringey Council have been accused of being asleep at the wheel after the recycling rate fell to a low not last seen since 2011/12.

Despite Haringey's stated aim “to get to 50% [recycling rate], and be London’s number one borough for recycling”, the rate peaked in 2014/15, and since then the ruling Labour Party has repeatedly refused to act. Late last year Labour councillors voted down proposals to remove charging for garden waste, a plan which was estimated to increase recycling by 2% in Haringey, but did not put forward any alternative proposals of their own to improve the recycling rate.

The new data shows that Haringey remains one of the worst boroughs in London for recycling, and continues to go backwards, despite previously blaming its worsening performance on the pandemic.

Cllr Scott Emery (LD-Highgate), Opposition Spokesperson for the Environment, said:
“The council has been asleep at the wheel for many years when it comes to our recycling rate, and the latest data shows that things are getting worse, not better. It is clearer than ever that increasing recycling isn’t a priority for the Labour Party either in Haringey or in London more widely, and that things won’t improve on their watch.”
