Closures of our banks here in Muswell Hill - Barclays, Lloyds and Halifax - are a bitter blow and HSBC has just announced a tranche of closures across north London.
Organisations like Cash Access UK have developed programmes to establish bank hubs in local communities. In Muswell Hill I would argue that we should have a specific building hosting all the major banks and building societies together which operate 5 days a week.
Today, it is virtually impossible to operate without a bank account, however in person banking is becoming increasingly difficult. Some of us will choose to bank online, it is generally more convenient than going to a branch. However, for others, especially the elderly, small businesses and charities branches provide a lifeline. Even those of us who usually bank online will on occasion need to visit a branch in person. Personal advice can be really helpful especially when an automated response just doesn’t seem to get it!
Although it is tempting to campaign against every single closure, the reality of the changing high street since covid means this is unrealistic. Instead, the Lib Dems are looking forward to a different solution, which has already proved popular across the country: the new Bank Hub.
We need to promote a workable solution and having a single Bank Hub based in one of the old bank buildings would allow us access to our banking services that we should fight to keep on our highstreet.
