Haringey Lib Dems welcome 20mph changes

HLD

Haringey Liberal Democrats have welcomed the changes from Transport for London to reduce the speed limit on all TfL owned roads in Haringey to 20mph from Friday 31st March[1]. This will mean almost all roads in Haringey have a speed limit of 20mph, though some council owned roads, including residential roads, will remain at 30mph, or even 40mph[2].

Previous questioning from Lib Dem councillors in 2020 led to the council stating that some roads were not suitable for a lower limit due to their ‘nature and environment’, but this policy was reversed in March 2022. However, since then, little progress has been made.

Opposition Spokesperson for Transport, Cllr Scott Emery (LD Highgate), said:
“These changes from TfL are very welcome, and highlight the inaction of Labour-run Haringey. The council should immediately follow TfL’s lead and reduce speed limits on all of our borough’s roads to 20mph, which makes our roads substantially safer, particularly for children, and also helps to reduce air pollution from particulates. There is absolutely no reason for delay.”
