Statement on Wrythe Green
I want to take a moment to address the tragic stabbing that occurred on Wrythe Green last week. This incident took place just around the corner from my office and only a short walk from my home. It is truly shocking to witness such violence in our community, and my thoughts are with the victim and his family as he recovers.
Knife crime is an issue I have worked on for many years. I have written articles, delivered speeches, and collaborated with leading campaigners to scrutinise the work of the London Mayor’s Violence Reduction Unit. I understand the deep anger and pain caused by this particularly violent form of crime, as well as the complex challenges in tackling it.
Tough sentencing, weapon bans, and greater police presence all play a role in addressing knife crime. However, they are only part of the solution. We must also confront the root causes that draw young people into a world where carrying a knife becomes an option. This means addressing a range of systemic failures, including cuts to youth services, family breakdown, a lack of opportunity, and the influence of drug-fuelled gangs. Only by tackling these issues can we truly engage in early intervention work that prevents knife carrying in the first place.
In direct response to this incident, my team and local ward councillors have been working closely with the police, who are undertaking a series of reassurance measures, including:
- Searches at Carshalton College entrances
- Weapon sweeps conducted by school officers in the area
- High-visibility and plain-clothes patrols of the Green
Additionally, I have personally written to Ministers at the Home Office to advocate for the policies necessary to address knife crime at its root.
I remain committed to doing everything possible, alongside others, to ensure that residents feel safe in their community and that no one should have to live in fear of violence. We must combine strong enforcement with long-term investment in early intervention and prevention if we are to put an end to this devastating crime.
Thank you for your continued support and vigilance.
