Planning permission refused for Wallington McDonald’s

A proposed new McDonald’s on the vacant Barclays site in Wallington Town Centre was refused planning permission by the council’s Planning Committee.

The committee heard that the specific proposed location, at a key point on the High Street, was inappropriate and likely to cause harm to the local area. This was due to two key factors: the influx of delivery bikes serving the outlet in a busy part of the High Street, and concerns regarding antisocial behaviour.

Local Wallington South Councillors Sam Martin and Muhammad Sadiq objected to the application, and Wallington South Councillor Jayne McCoy, a member of the committee, voted against it at the meeting.

Cllr Martin spoke against the application on the night and said afterwards: “We are pleased that the committee has reached this decision. Many local residents have conveyed their concerns about this application to us, and it was clear that the site is not appropriate for what is being proposed.”

There may be an appeal against the decision by McDonald’s.
