Council-run parenting programme transforming lives

An exhausted father of two autistic children was struggling to balance their needs with his own challenges. But then his life turned around.

When his child’s school suggested he attend a Universal Parenting Support Service course, he felt insulted at first—but reluctantly agreed to try two sessions.

Now, two and a half years later, he's a lead volunteer for the programme, helping other parents facing similar challenges.

The service supports parents dealing with a wide range of issues, particularly the stress of navigating systems for children with special educational needs (SEN) and managing their own mental health.

What sets the programme apart is the sense of community. Parents find camaraderie and support, often preventing issues from escalating into more serious problems that require intervention.

The programme is run by the council, but its success is largely due to the commitment and added value provided by parent group leaders.
