West Cornwall Elects New Wave of Lib Dem Councillors

4 May 2025

The Liberal Democrats celebrated victory at the weekend after the Cornwall Council elections. Across St Ives Constituency the Liberal Democrats gained 4 seats from the Conservatives, holding onto their three held seats and seeing off the Reform surge seen in the rest of the Country. The other seats went to Independents (5) and Mebyon Kernow (1).

Local MP Andrew George stood down from his Council seat (Ludgvan, Heamoor, Gulval, Madron), which is now held by his Liberal Democrat successor, Juliet Line. Other victors were Thalia Marrington (Mousehole, Newlyn & St Buryan), Nicola Boase (Helston South & Meneage), Rory Gow (Mullion & St Keverne), Jay Hodgetts (Porthleven, Breage & Germoe), John Martin (Longrock, Marazion & St Erth), and Luke Rogers (St Ives East, Lelant & Carbis Bay).

St Ives Liberal Democrats chair, Marc Hadley, said, “We are thrilled with this set of results. It is clear that the Lib Dems are a fighting force to be reckoned with locally, not just at the parliamentary level but also in local government.”

Leader of the Cornwall Liberal Democrats Councillors group, Leigh Frost, said ‘I’m proud that across Cornwall so many people turned to the Liberal Democrats in these elections. Every one of our councillors will be your community champion, we will strive to ensure a positive change for Cornwall”.
