97% increase in sewage dumps by Anglian Water last year

New figures released by the Environment Agency have shown that Anglian Water which covers Cambridgeshire discharged sewage a staggering 31,623 times last year, a 97% rise compared to in 2022.

Cambridgeshire Liberal Democrats are calling for tougher action against sewage dumping in local rivers/beaches, including replacing Ofwat with a tougher regulator. The party has also called for a ban on bonuses for water company bosses whose firms have dumped sewage into waterways.

Conservative MPs have consistently voted against measures which would have helped to tackle the crisis, including MP for South Cambs, and candidate for the new constituency of St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire, Anthony Browne.

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for St Neots & Mid Cambridgeshire, Ian Sollom, said:

“That sewage is being pumped into Cambridgeshire’s rivers and waterways at this scale is deeply wrong.

“This Conservative government has voted time and again against tougher action on sewage dumping. They seem perfectly content for our communities to put up with it.

"Here in Cambridgeshire, the Liberal Democrats have been calling for tougher action to stop sewage being dumped in our local rivers. Water company bosses whose firms have pumped sewage into our waterways should be banned from taking bonuses until our communities and rivers are protected from these discharges."
