Pippa Heylings Wins Historic Victory in South Cambridgeshire
Pippa Heylings has made history having been elected as the first ever Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for South Cambridgeshire, securing a majority of over 10,000 votes over the Conservative candidate.
The victory came amid a night of sensational victories for the Liberal Democrats across the ‘Blue Wall’. With previously safe Conservative seats, including three in Cambridgeshire, falling to hard-working, volunteer-fueled Liberal Democrat campaigns. As well as South Cambridgeshire, the party won the new St Neots and Mid Cambs and Ely and East Cambs constituencies.
“This is your victory”
Pippa’s victory speech was punctuated first by her praise for the people around her, thanking the Returning Officer, Count Staff and her fellow candidates, as well as the people “without whom this wouldn’t be possible” including her family, friends and all the people who had worked on the campaign - declaring “this is your victory.”
“A commitment to You”
Pippa then moved on to the “serious message” that underlined her and the Liberal Democrats’ campaign, “making sure that sure that healthcare and social care remain in the headlines”, something that only hours later she has ensured by calling, alongside her colleagues, for the new Labour government to introduce an Emergency Health and Social Care budget.
“You told me how you care deeply about being able to afford a home and place to live, you have also told me how about how passionate you are about ensuring that you have a say in the future of our community and our area.
And when we spoke I made a commitment to you, that every vote for a Liberal Democrat is a vote for a strong local champion who will fight for the NHS and social care, who will fight to stop the cost of living crisis, who will fight to stop the sewage scandal and will tackle climate change at the speed that we need to.
I restate my commitment to you, I hear you, I will fight for you.”
