As the number of government members resigning reaches 50, Boris Johnson is still trying to cling on to power today as the government collapses before our eyes.

Speaking in the Cambridgeshire Independent, Pippa Heylings (Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for South Cambridgeshire) challenges Anthony Browne MP to do more than simply write letters if he is finally serious about ousting Johnson, and to resign the Tory whip.  Anthony Browne finally revealed after the resignations of Javid and Sunak that he had written a letter of no confidence in Johnson, after months of being urged to do so and refusing to reveal to his constituents how he voted in the no confidence vote. Pippa said:

“It has been shameful to see this area’s Conservative MP stand loyally by Boris Johnson's side through years of scandals and lies.

“Through Covid care home disasters, the partygate scandal, unfair tax hikes and lies upon lies from Number 10, Anthony Browne has stood alongside Boris Johnson as a loyal supporter – and has waited until now to reveal his letter of no confidence in the Prime Minister. He is acting out of naked self-interest, and is clearly just blowing in the wind. South Cambridgeshire deserves a local MP who puts local people first instead of just acting to save their own skin,”.

She added “It is time our area had an independent-minded MP who actually votes down unfair tax hikes, demands better for our NHS and doesn’t side with Boris Johnson until the very last minute.

“Anthony Browne is guilty by association by remaining as a Conservative MP, and if they really cared about South Cambridgeshire they would resign to sit as an independent. Every day they remain a Conservative MP is another day they prop up Boris Johnson by voting through his out-of-touch policies in Parliament.

“At the next election, it will be up to the people of South Cambs to get rid of Boris Johnson to restore integrity and decency in our politics. It’s a two-horse race here between Boris Johnson’s Conservatives and the local Liberal Democrats.”
