Trafford Liberal Democrats back £680 tax cut for working people

Trafford Liberal Democrats have backed a new plan to cut taxes and put £680 a year back into the pockets of working people.

The proposals, announced by Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey at the party’s Autumn Conference, would raise the threshold at which people start paying income tax from £12,570 to £15,000.

This would take 2.5 million of the lowest-paid workers out of paying income tax altogether, while cutting taxes for millions more.

The Liberal Democrats would also raise the point at which people begin paying the higher 40% rate of income tax from £50,270 to £56,000. Around 760,000 people, including many teachers, nurses and other public-sector workers, would be taken out of the higher-rate tax band.

The plan would be introduced over five years and funded through the economic growth generated by rebuilding Britain’s relationship with Europe, including joining the single market and agreeing a new customs union.

Cllr Shaun Ennis, Leader of the Trafford Liberal Democrat Council Group, said:

“People across Trafford are working hard, but rising bills and unfair tax thresholds mean they are keeping less of what they earn.
Reform would fund their tax plans with cruel cuts to support for people with disabilities.  The Liberal Democrats are the only party that is honest about what Nigel Farage's Brexit has cost us.  Rebuilding our relationship with Europe is the only way to deliver a fair economy.
Our plan would put £680 a year back into the pockets of hardworking families."
