One year on, Sinderland Road crossing is making a difference

2 Sep 2026

For more than 20 years, residents had been asking for a safe way to cross at the junction of Sinderland Road and Manchester Road.

A year after the pelican crossing was installed, people are still telling Cllr Ulrich Savary and Liberal Democrat campaigner Barbara Gerard what a difference it has made. It is safer, easier to use and has improved the area.

Before the crossing, pedestrians had less than three seconds to get across the road. That was particularly difficult for parents with children on the school run, older residents and anyone using a buggy or mobility aid.

After being elected in May 2024, Ulrich found that funding for the crossing had not been approved. He worked hard with residents to push the case until it was finally delivered.

Cllr Ulrich Savary said:

“People had waited far too long for this crossing. Residents now tell me how much safer it feels, especially when walking children to school. It has made a real difference to the area. It was shameful that people had to wait so long. Both Labour and the Conservatives promised to deliver it, but neither got it approved. It was only through hard work with the community that we finally made it happen.”

This is what Liberal Democrats do: we listen to residents, work hard and deliver.
