Lib Dems select Jane Brophy to fight for real change in Altrincham and Sale West
Former Member of the European Parliament and local Cllr Jane Brophy has been selected as the Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for Altrincham and Sale West.
Jane brings experience from local government, the NHS and the European Parliament. She represented North West England as an MEP, recently served as Mayor of Trafford and has spent much of her professional career working in the NHS as a dietitian.
She has also represented local residents in Trafford for more than 20 years, giving her a strong understanding of the communities, challenges and opportunities across Altrincham and Sale West.
Following her selection, Jane said:
“It is a real honour to have been selected to represent the Liberal Democrats in Altrincham and Sale West. I have spent my career standing up for people—through my work in the NHS, as a local councillor, as Mayor of Trafford and in the European Parliament. I want to use that experience to be a strong and effective voice for our communities at Westminster. Labour promised change, but people are not seeing it. The cost-of-living crisis continues, household bills remain too high and too many people are struggling to access the health and public services they need.
Locally, residents are paying more in council tax while many basic services are getting worse. People should not continually be asked to pay more while receiving less in return. Our Liberal Democrat team works all year round. We listen to people on their doorsteps, help residents with local problems and fight for the improvements our communities deserve.
I will work hard to earn people’s trust and give Altrincham and Sale West the strong, experienced and independent voice it needs in Parliament.”
As an MEP, Jane worked on employment, social affairs, public health and environmental issues. Her professional experience in the NHS has also given her first-hand knowledge of the pressures facing patients, health workers and local services.

“Jane brings an exceptional range of experience. She has served people through the NHS, represented the North West in the European Parliament and worked tirelessly for communities across Trafford. She understands how decisions made in Westminster affect people’s everyday lives, from the cost of their weekly shop and energy bills to getting a GP appointment or receiving support from their local council.
The Liberal Democrats are growing across Trafford. Jane will work alongside our strong local team to take our positive message to every part of the constituency and give residents a real alternative to a Labour government that is failing to deliver the change people were promised.”
Jane and the local Liberal Democrat team will begin campaigning immediately across Altrincham, Ashton upon Mersey, Broadheath, Hale, Hale Barns, Sale and Timperley.
The campaign will focus on tackling the cost-of-living crisis, improving health and care services, properly funding local councils, supporting families and carers, and confronting the climate emergency—including cutting energy bills through better-insulated homes and protecting our communities from flooding and extreme weather.
