Today, Windsor's Conservative MP voted to take the United Kingdom out of the European Convention of Human Rights. Fortunately he was in a minority.
The ECHR was created by Sir Winston Churchill and other European leaders in 1950, after World War Two, to ensure a minimum standard of human rights of all people in Europe and to protect them from harmful authoritarian regimes.
Key rights protected by the Convention are the right to life, freedom from torture, right to a fair trial and freedom of expression.
- Why does Mr Rankin want to reduce your human rights?
- Which rights do Mr Rankin and Mr Farage want to dispense with?
- Would you trust those men with your human rights?
In the Commons vote, MPs defeated Nigel Farage's motion to withdraw the UK from the ECHR by 154 votes to 96. Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey led the opposition, while the Labour frontbench abstained. Many Conservatives, including the Windsor MP, backed Farage's motion.
So we see a little more of who the Windsor MP really is...
"Farage wants to do away with the Britain Churchill built and turn it into Trump's America. We won't let him." - Ed Davey, Autumn Conference
