One of several empty shops in central Ely which is suffering both from the general crisis on our high streets and from the effects
of council policies.

Ely City Centre is struggling thanks to wrong-headed planning policies, according to local campaigners.

2018 saw more shop closures in the High Street and Market Street, and city centre restaurants suffered as the new leisure
complex was opened outside the city.

In addition, East Cambs Council has given approval for more shopping facilities to built on Angel Drove by the new bypass, thus
further undermining the city centre.

“Towns with an attractive centre and excellent specialist shops have shown that high streets can thrive,” said city centre resident Kevin Wilkins.“But Ely suffers from the Conservatives’ love for edge-of-town shopping which does real damage to our high streets.”
