Charlotte Cane, Liberal Democrat MP for Ely and East Cambridgeshire, has condemned the Government for turning its back on farmers, after reports that the Chancellor plans to press ahead with the damaging Family Farm Tax in next month’s Budget.

Since being elected, Charlotte has been a consistent voice for farmers in Westminster and across East Cambridgeshire. She meets regularly with local NFU members, has raised the issue of the Family Farm Tax in Parliament, and has pressed Ministers to provide urgent clarity on future agricultural funding.

Charlotte Cane MP said:

“Farmers across Ely and East Cambridgeshire have told me how hard this tax has hit them — it’s out of touch and deeply unfair.

“Our local family farms are vital not just for food production, but for the environment and for keeping our rural economy alive.

“I’ve met with farmers across my constituency who are worried about the future of their businesses and the next generation’s ability to stay on the land. They deserve better than a Government that refuses to listen.

“After one of the hardest years in memory for the farming sector, the Chancellor’s refusal to rethink this policy shows just how little the Government understands life in rural Britain.

I will keep fighting for the farmers and rural communities I represent — they deserve a government that has their back, not one that makes their lives harder.”
